Deck Restoration & Staining in Ottawa
Years of Canadian sun, rain, snow and freeze-thaw cycles can turn a beautiful wooden deck grey, dull and covered in mildew — that doesn't mean it's ruined.
Before and after
Can a grey, weathered deck be saved, or does it need to be replaced?
A deck that's turned grey and dull after years of Ottawa's sun, rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles isn't automatically beyond saving. The wood structure underneath may be perfectly sound — surface damage from weathering and mildew is often reversible. We assess the condition of the wood first to determine what's worth restoring, then work through controlled restoration, brightening, and a protective stain to bring it back.
What makes restoration different for older homes in Ottawa's heritage neighbourhoods?
Ottawa's historic architecture, especially in areas near Parliament Hill and across the city's heritage core, often means the decking wood has character worth preserving. An older deck may be structurally sound but just weathered—or it may have hidden damage that appears only after a proper assessment. That's why condition evaluation comes first; it tells us whether the wood can be safely restored or if structural work is needed before any finishing.
Does your deck need different restoration just because it's in Orleans, Riverside South, or Kanata Avenue?
Wooden decks in Ottawa's different neighbourhoods—on Kanata Avenue, in Orleans, Riverside South, Nepean, and beyond—have all weathered over the years. Whether that weathering is surface-level or has compromised the wood's integrity, the approach is always the same: condition assessment first, then controlled restoration and protective staining. The location doesn't determine what your deck needs; the actual state of the wood does.
Common questions about deck restoration & staining in Ottawa
My deck has gone grey and mildewed — can it be saved?
Usually, yes. Grey, dull, mildewed wood is rarely ruined. We assess the wood and choose the right method — controlled pressure washing, wood cleaners and strippers, pH balancing or detailed sanding — to prepare it without causing damage.
Why does preparation matter so much before staining?
The right process is the difference between a deck that fades in a season and one that stays protected for years. We only apply the protective stain after the wood is properly prepared.
